Social Emotional Wellbeing
Social Emotional Wellbeing refers to how people think and feel about themselves, their relationships and how they handle emotions and challenges in daily life. It’s about feeling safe, connected and confident, and having the skills to manage stress, form healthy relationships, make thoughtful decisions and bounce back from setbacks.
For children and young people, strong social emotional wellbeing helps them:
-
Understand and express their emotions in healthy ways
-
Build and maintain positive relationships
-
Feel good about themselves and others
-
Make responsible, respectful choices
-
Manage stress, anxiety, and frustration
-
Stay motivated and engaged in learning
At Mother of Good Counsel, we believe that wellbeing is the foundation for success—both in and out of the classroom. That’s why we prioritise a safe, caring, and inclusive environment where every student feels seen, heard and valued, and supported to grow, learn and thrive.
Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) equips students with essential life skills that support their overall wellbeing and effectiveness. Through SEL, students learn to recognize and manage their emotions, show empathy and care for others, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and navigate challenges confidently and constructively.
These competencies nurture emotional literacy in individuals and school communities, and flourish best in safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environments. When embedded into everyday school life, SEL creates a foundation for academic achievement, strong mental and physical health, meaningful relationships, and active, responsible citizenship in a democratic society.
By fostering social, emotional, and motivational competence, SEL promotes both individual and collective success. It also supports prevention and early intervention efforts across school, home, and community settings—building the social and emotional strengths that young people need to flourish.
